A Physical That Is Actually Useful

The value of a yearly physical is not the stethoscope. It is catching high blood pressure, prediabetes, or a cancer early, keeping your vaccines current, and having a doctor who already knows you when something goes wrong.

We build each physical around the screenings the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends for your age and risk factors, rather than a one-size-fits-all checklist. For a walkthrough of the visit, read what to expect at your annual physical.

History & Risk Review

Your personal and family history, medications and supplements, sleep, mood, alcohol and tobacco use, and what has changed since last year.

Physical Examination

Blood pressure, weight, and a head-to-toe exam focused on the areas that matter for your age and health history.

A Plan for the Year

Screenings, vaccines, and lab work that are due, plus clear next steps for any issues we find.

How Your Physical Works

  1. Step 1

    Before your visit

Complete your patient forms, gather your medication list and any outside records, and ask whether you need to fast for lab work. See what to bring.

  2. Step 2

    History and risk review

We go over what has changed in your health, your family history, and your medications. Knowing your family history can change which screenings you need and when; our family history guide helps you prepare.

  3. Step 3

    Exam and in-office tests

Your provider examines you and orders any blood or urine tests you are due for, which we can draw in the office. See our in-office lab work.

  4. Step 4

    Your prevention plan

You leave knowing which screenings and vaccines are due, what your numbers mean, and when to come back. Results are posted to the patient portal and reviewed with you.

Bringing up a new problem?

Please tell us. We would rather address it than have you wait, but checking a new symptom or managing a condition is billed differently from preventive care, so part of the visit may have a copay. Our guide to preventive versus diagnostic visits explains why.

Annual Physical Questions

Do you offer annual physicals in St. Petersburg?

Yes. Our internists provide comprehensive annual physical exams for adults, including a review of your history and medications, a physical examination, and the screenings and vaccines recommended for your age and risk factors. Call (727) 820-7800 to schedule.

How long does an annual physical take?

Plan on 45 to 60 minutes with your provider. A first visit as a new patient is scheduled for about an hour so we can go through your full history. Arriving with your forms completed and a list of your medications helps the time go further.

Is an annual physical free with insurance?

Most private health plans must cover recommended preventive services, such as many screenings and vaccines, with no copay when you see an in-network provider. If you ask about a new problem or need tests for a condition during the same visit, that part may be billed as a regular office visit with your usual cost sharing.

Does Medicare cover an annual physical?

Original Medicare does not cover a routine yearly physical. It covers a one-time Welcome to Medicare preventive visit and a yearly Annual Wellness Visit, which focuses on your prevention plan rather than a hands-on exam. Some Medicare Advantage plans add a routine physical as an extra benefit.

Do I need to fast before my physical?

Only if we ask you to. Many blood tests, including most cholesterol panels, no longer require fasting. If fasting is needed, it usually means nothing but water for 8 to 12 hours beforehand. If you take insulin or diabetes pills, call us for instructions before fasting.

How often do I need a physical?

It depends on your age, health, and conditions. Adults with chronic conditions need regular visits anyway, and screenings follow their own schedules. For healthy adults, a yearly preventive visit is a convenient way to keep screenings and vaccines current and to maintain a relationship with a doctor who knows you.
