Pulmonary Health Questions

Asthma is a chronic disease that causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways, often starting in childhood and triggered by allergies or exercise. COPD is a progressive lung disease, typically caused by long-term smoking, that makes it hard to breathe. While they share symptoms, their causes and progression differ.

Internists diagnose respiratory infections through physical exams and sometimes chest X-rays. We prescribe appropriate treatments like antibiotics for bacterial pneumonia and manage symptoms. We also focus on prevention through vaccinations and by managing underlying conditions that increase risk.

You should see a doctor for a cough that lasts longer than three weeks, is severe, brings up blood, or is accompanied by fever, shortness of breath, or weight loss. A persistent cough can be a sign of many conditions, from post-nasal drip to more serious lung diseases.
