The Challenge of Staying Active in Florida
Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. It reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, depression, and dozens of other conditions. But exercising in Florida's heat and humidity presents unique challenges that require careful planning to stay safe.

How Heat Affects Your Body During Exercise
During exercise, your muscles generate heat, and your body must dissipate that heat to maintain a safe core temperature. The primary cooling mechanism is sweating, which works through evaporation. However, Florida's high humidity (often 70 to 90 percent) dramatically reduces the effectiveness of evaporative cooling because the air is already saturated with moisture.
When your body cannot cool itself efficiently, your core temperature rises, your heart works harder to pump blood to both your muscles and your skin for cooling, and you lose fluid and electrolytes through sweat at an accelerated rate. This combination can quickly progress from discomfort to a medical emergency.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 700 people die from heat-related illness in the United States each year, and thousands more are hospitalized. Exercising in the heat is one of the most common triggers.
The Heat Illness Spectrum
Heat-related illness progresses through stages. Recognizing early signs allows you to intervene before a serious condition develops.
Heat Cramps
The mildest form of heat illness. Painful muscle spasms, usually in the legs, arms, or abdomen, caused by electrolyte depletion. Treatment involves resting in a cool place, stretching gently, and replacing fluids and electrolytes.
Heat Exhaustion
A more serious condition with symptoms including heavy sweating, weakness, cold and clammy skin, nausea or vomiting, fast weak pulse, headache, dizziness, and fainting. If you experience these symptoms, stop exercising immediately, move to a cool environment, and drink fluids. If symptoms do not improve within 30 minutes, seek medical attention.
Heat Stroke (Medical Emergency)
Heat stroke occurs when your core body temperature exceeds 104 degrees Fahrenheit and your body's cooling system fails. Symptoms include hot and dry skin (sweating may have stopped), rapid strong pulse, confusion, loss of consciousness, and seizures. Heat stroke is life-threatening and requires immediate emergency medical care. Call 911 and begin cooling the person while waiting for help.
Safe Exercise Strategies for Florida
Time Your Workouts Wisely
The safest times to exercise outdoors in Florida are early morning (before 8 AM) and evening (after 6 PM) when temperatures and UV exposure are lowest. Avoid exercising outdoors between 10 AM and 4 PM during summer months when heat, humidity, and UV radiation are at their peak.
If your schedule requires midday exercise, move your workout indoors to an air-conditioned gym, pool, or home environment.
Acclimate Gradually
If you are new to exercising in the heat or returning after a break, allow 10 to 14 days for your body to adapt. Start with shorter, less intense sessions and gradually increase duration and intensity. Heat acclimatization improves your body's sweating efficiency, lowers your resting core temperature, and reduces heart rate during exercise.
Hydrate Before, During, and After
- Before: Drink 16 to 20 ounces of water two to three hours before exercise and another 8 ounces 20 to 30 minutes before starting.
- During: Drink 7 to 10 ounces every 10 to 20 minutes during exercise. For sessions longer than 60 minutes, include an electrolyte drink to replace sodium and potassium lost in sweat.
- After: Drink 16 to 24 ounces for every pound of body weight lost during exercise.

Dress Appropriately
Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored, moisture-wicking clothing. Avoid cotton, which absorbs sweat and holds it against your skin, reducing cooling efficiency. A breathable hat and UV-protective sunglasses are also important.
Adjust Your Intensity
On hot and humid days, your body is working harder just to maintain temperature regulation, which means your normal workout pace will feel significantly more difficult. Listen to your body and reduce intensity by 10 to 20 percent on particularly hot days. Use heart rate monitoring rather than pace to gauge effort.
Choose Your Location Wisely
Shaded trails, waterfront paths with sea breezes, and tree-lined parks are significantly cooler than exposed roads, parking lots, and open fields. Swimming and water-based exercise are excellent warm-weather alternatives that combine fitness with natural cooling.
Indoor Alternatives for Peak Heat Days
When the heat index exceeds 100 degrees Fahrenheit, outdoor exercise becomes dangerous for most people. Effective indoor alternatives include:
- Gym workouts with strength training and cardio machines
- Swimming in indoor pools
- Yoga or Pilates classes
- Home workout videos or apps
- Mall walking (a popular and effective option for older adults)
- Indoor cycling or rowing
Who Is at Higher Risk?
Certain people are more vulnerable to heat-related illness:
- Adults over 65, whose temperature regulation is less efficient
- Children, who generate more heat relative to their body size
- People with chronic conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and obesity
- Patients taking diuretics, beta-blockers, or antihistamines
- Those who are not acclimatized to heat
- Anyone who has had a previous heat-related illness
